Don’t be part of the problem

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on September 4, 2014 by Kelli Jae BaeliSeptember 4, 2014

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. We’ve all heard that mantra, but it’s true. Recently, I was caught at just the right moment (inopportune, maybe) by a post a “writer” made, asking for help with formatting, and lamenting how hard it was and wondering why she had to worry about it at all. Her posts throughout also revealed that she could not even handle a few sentences without making errors. And then there were all the commenters helping her like she was a child. So I posted an angry comment. I don’t like to … Continue reading →

The Pitfall of Literary Segregation

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on August 12, 2014 by Kelli Jae BaeliSeptember 4, 2017

I believe it is a pitfall to think that fiction for lesbians is all that different from/than fiction for straight people. And I can say that as a person who reads largely mainstream fiction, and very little of what is termed “lesfic.” I grew up reading mainstream, and I continue to do so, and I am quite picky about what I read. It’s hard for an author to get and keep my attention, if there are any thin spots in his/her craft. I think I might be in the process of forming a new list of Favorite Authors. So far, … Continue reading →

Gun Laws: the Truth is in the Middle

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on March 13, 2013 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 13, 2013

In a sign-meme on Facebook recently, there was a quote by Ronald Reagan: “I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.” ~Ronald Reagan, in a speech at his 78th birthday celebration in Los Angeles on February 6, 1989. KG MacGregor makes all salient points on this, in her blog Baby, You Can Drive My Gun when suggests using driving laws as a template … Continue reading →

Book Review: Valencia

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on October 25, 2011 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 24, 2013

One of the reasons I began writing lesbian fiction 25 years ago, was because I could not, at that time, find a kindred spirit in them. I could not relate to those characters, and their lives. The women in the pages of the lesbian fiction I read back then did not represent me, nor anyone I knew, or wanted to know. This offended me greatly. As for the book, Valencia, itself, the author does have some writing talent and I did notice a periodic turn of a phrase or insightful comment, but overall, these positives were overshadowed by everything else. … Continue reading →

PC, Bad. Honesty, Good.

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on March 24, 2008 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 24, 2008

Political Correctness, I believe, is doing more harm than good in this country… For instance, that message you get when you call almost any business line that says,”Press one for English.” As an American, I understand that the native language is English. If there are those in this country who only speak Spanish, then let them press one for Spanish. If they came here to integrate, then it’s “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” It’s not that it’s all that profoundly inconvenient to press one, it’s that it’s aggravating because of what it represents. This sort of thing … Continue reading →

Specious Nonsense: Dobbs on the Dot Again

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on February 12, 2008 by Kelli Jae BaeliApril 30, 2013

Lou Dobbs is one of my favorite journalists, (along with Keith Olbermann) because he speaks the truth…the stories he covers are not the usual fare, but are at once indicative of how the mainstream media misses the most important stories–the ones that really matter. If i have to watch another 30 minute segment on Brittany Spears, i think I’m going to claw my own eyes out. When did some wayward pop star become newsworthy? How is the state of her psyche more important than the slew of other things going on that we, as citizens, need to know about? To … Continue reading →

Being PC Does More Harm Than Good

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on November 27, 2007 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 10, 2013

DISCLAIMER: in recent years, Glenn Beck has become an extremist zealot, for which i have NO respect at all. But when he first became known, I enjoyed his show and him. Now, he’s just another nutjob conservative who is part of the problem. Political Correctness, I believe is doing more harm than good in this country…I think I agree with Glenn Beck on this matter, if only in part. His deeper point seems to be that braille on the bathrooms or on a coffee pot for that matter, does not address the real issue, which is rational solutions for accessibility. … Continue reading →

Quotes from Kelli Jae Baeli

"You absolutely can put a square peg in a round hole. But this requires the use of a hammer."

Politics Quotes

"People feel removed from sexism. 'I'm not a sexist, but I'm not a feminist.' They think there's this fuzzy middle ground. There's no fuzzy middle ground. You either believe that women are people or you don't. It's that simple." (Joss Whedon)
