Literary Loitering

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on December 14, 2015 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 17, 2022

With her usual flair for passion and wit, Baeli shines as she examines reading habits–her own, and that of others–in this 3rd volume of the Reading, Writing & No Arithmetic series. On display are also more of her thoughts about her writing process and the sometimes difficult obstacles that go along with being an Indie author and publisher. With essay titles like Thoughts from a Literary Contrarian, Alien Methodology, Scribe’s Melancholia, Literary Mind-Expansion & 50 Shades of Grape, Careless Editors & Languishing in Romantical Writer Myths, Holding Saddlehorn, Fiction Writes Me, Good Writers Aren’t Good Accidentally, and Writer as Reader, … Continue reading →

The Truth of Fiction

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on December 14, 2015 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 17, 2022

Kelli Jae Baeli, Indie Publisher with Indie Literati Press and Lesbian Literati Press, and author of over 45 books, numerous articles, stories and essays, shares some thoughts about the writing craft and the writer’s life, which necessarily also includes lots of reading, followed by thoughtful examinations, splenetic ruminations and often humorous outbursts of weirdness. From Stranger Fiction, Reviews & Truthiness “First, an opinion isn’t always a fact. Second, you can’t please everyone. And third, and most importantly, (and with the most paradoxical irony), this concept: I may have failed to do the best job on a book, if I didn’t … Continue reading →

Diction Deja Vu

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on December 14, 2015 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 17, 2022

“The competition to be a published writer is fierce. The dream of getting published has been overly-romanticized in the media so that many beginning writers think not only that writing is easy, but that they have a good chance of getting a contract from a major house. The odds are, realistically, one in a million-maybe worse than that. We hear about the success stories, not the ones who spend their lives toiling for that dream, to the exclusion of everything else, only to wind up poor, alone, lacking in social skills, and profoundly jaded that life has passed them by.There … Continue reading →

Giving it Away: Spoilers as Both Noun & Accusation

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on September 17, 2014 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 17, 2022

Thank you for your interest in my work. Please enjoy this free download. (click the cover image) Giving it Away: Spoilers as Both Noun & Accusation (Why Book Reviews Matter & How to Write a Proper One) Ironically, in response to one review on this essay, I feel I must point out that this is a FREE essay, not a novel; it does not pretend to elucidate completely the subject at hand; it’s about 10 pages on the topic. I am too busy writing full-length novels to give it more time than that, and yes, I do advertise my other … Continue reading →

The Girls in the Band is doing very well in the charts! Thank you, readers! Here’s the FB live video I did on 19Sept2017 TOPIC: sex in lesbian fiction, menopause as it pertains to readers and writers, an erotica project, and many other things. You could call it live STEAMing, I suppose. LOL. Friend me on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/jaebaeli Melissa and myself in our first FB Live streaming video (16Sept2017). We talk about Hillary’s new book, my new releases, Melissa’s book projects, and calling the cops last night–we hope it wasn’t a hate crime, but our house was shot at.   … Continue reading →

Streaming & Quilting: Differing Methodologies in Novelwriting

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on October 2, 2012 by Kelli Jae BaeliDecember 13, 2015

I often discuss methodology with other writers. While in general we might share certain features, we can have completely different methods for writing a book. Some writers have this uncanny, subconscious method that seems to flow from a Muse and out onto the page, with the writer as conduit. It seems amazing to me that they can start at the beginning (the beginning!?) and write straight through until the book is done. A linear stream of subconsciousness. No major tweaking of plot points or planting of red herrings {1}, rarely any insertion of missing foreshadowing or details that have to … Continue reading →

Quotes from Kelli Jae Baeli

"Another one bites the dust....How can she send me a picture and then walk in the door 20 years older? In my age group, 20 years is a big deal. It means she might show up wearing Depends undergarments."

Politics Quotes

"People feel removed from sexism. 'I'm not a sexist, but I'm not a feminist.' They think there's this fuzzy middle ground. There's no fuzzy middle ground. You either believe that women are people or you don't. It's that simple." (Joss Whedon)

Favorite Quotes

If you think that Christianity is the most direct and undefiled expression of love and compassion the world has ever seen, you do not know much about the world's other religions. Take the religion of Jainism as one example. The Jains preach a doctrine of utter non-violence. While the Jains believe many improbable things about the universe, they do not believe the sorts of things that lit the fires of the Inquisition. You probably think the Inquisition was a perversion of the "true" spirit of Christianity. Perhaps it was. The problem, however, is that the teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. You are, of course, free to interpret the Bible differently--though isn't it amazing that you have succeeded in discerning the true teachings of Christianity, while the most influential thinkers in the history of your faith failed? ~SAM HARRIS, Letter to a Christian Nation
