Projects, Pitfalls, Promise

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on July 31, 2017 by Kelli Jae BaeliSeptember 11, 2020

Shame on me. I haven’t posted a blog in a long time. SO much going on with us lately. Dealing with sudden health issues happening all at once, burned out, exhausted, feeling ill all the time, I was certainly not inspired to write. So I decided to take a 6-month sabbatical. It turned into 8 months when I found out in the middle of it I needed major surgery. So, I had to face my #2 biggest fear, (surgery) and I’ve been recovering from a full abdominal hysterectomy, and after almost 8 weeks, I’m still having some issues, which I … Continue reading →

Thoughts on The Thief of Time by John Boyles

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on December 23, 2016 by Kelli Jae BaeliAugust 5, 2017

I have missed sitting down with a physical book and reading. My recent decision to take a sabbatical and just allow myself to be creative and deadline-free, had me standing in front of my fiction bookshelf, seeking something new. Something enjoyable. As most of you know by now, I have become quite finicky about my fiction reading. I read so much of my own work in pumping out work in the last ten years, that I have had little time to read for pleasure, and when I do, it’s inevitably just before I go to sleep, and by then, my … Continue reading →

Verbal Chinese Water Torture

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on March 28, 2015 by Kelli Jae BaeliAugust 5, 2017

“Great Literature” is a generally agreed-upon concept–but according to *whom*, really? By its very nature, it is also a subjective concept. A great deal of literature most commonly defined as shining touchstones, to me are little more that dull or even irritating. Take the notorious opening lines from A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was … Continue reading →

Don’t be part of the problem

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on September 4, 2014 by Kelli Jae BaeliSeptember 4, 2014

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. We’ve all heard that mantra, but it’s true. Recently, I was caught at just the right moment (inopportune, maybe) by a post a “writer” made, asking for help with formatting, and lamenting how hard it was and wondering why she had to worry about it at all. Her posts throughout also revealed that she could not even handle a few sentences without making errors. And then there were all the commenters helping her like she was a child. So I posted an angry comment. I don’t like to … Continue reading →

Thoughts from a Literary Contrarian

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on April 26, 2013 by Kelli Jae BaeliSeptember 12, 2017

Let’s face it: the fairy tale never happens like that in real life. So if it’s not naïveté, then it’s compliant escapism; and what a sad commentary on a life, that one would need such callow, fanciful stories to avoid being present in it. I enjoy the commonality and compatibility in my current relationship. (Wait. Current relationship makes it sound temporary. It’s not. Let me give that another go: I enjoy the commonality and compatibility with my love, my life, my lovely wife. (Better). Anyway, we have this ritual of reading every night before sleep, if not also in blocks … Continue reading →

Demanding Better of Lesfic

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on April 10, 2013 by Kelli Jae BaeliSeptember 12, 2017

I am reposting this here, because I was so relieved to see that someone else out there sees this issue clearly. I am hoping we can overhaul the lesbian literature environment, eventually. From the Lynn Pierce blog….       Piercing Fiction: Straight Arrow Reviews Literature, movies and whatever else occurs to me. Sunday, April 7, 2013 It’s time to be more discriminating in the books This is a post I made on a the group I moderate on Yahoo called Lesfic_Unbound. I’m sharing it here as a thought to put out to the community.I had contact with an author … Continue reading →

Glaring Errors

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on March 7, 2013 by Kelli Jae BaeliMarch 7, 2013

This is a wide subject area, but I want to focus on just a few things. As a segue, I have to share this post I came across. I was on a forum where people were posting for help about making money blogging. One poster was frustrated and confused and posted this: “Been using these for over a year and made 2 penies.  How do I earn money on goggle.  It is simply frostrating.  I posted so many adds  on my blog but I have earned no money. what is happening? I have been trying to write all the … Continue reading →

Are Writers Born or Made?

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on May 7, 2012 by Kelli Jae BaeliAugust 26, 2015

I was discussing this topic with another writer, and as is my tendency, I wallow in the gray areas. A simple answer is never forthcoming and requires examination. So if I were to answer the question of whether writers are born or made, I’d have to say Both. And then I would have to wade through the morass of That-Depends toward the destination of Picker of Nits. The first question I would throw back is “What do you mean by writer?” One could be a writer, in that she actually WRITES. But it doesn’t automatically ensure the writing is any … Continue reading →

Writing Tips: To Know, To Begin, To Feel

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on May 6, 2012 by Kelli Jae BaeliAugust 26, 2015

As a writer, I am always in training. Like any vocation, it can be mastered to some degree if the individual cares enough about it. One thing I have noticed along the way, is that I have used certain phrases and words which do not serve the story in quality, plot or character development, or even in achieving clean, sharp examples of good craft. Most of these examples refer to rough drafts, as I have been writing for 25 years, and cannot be excused for doing this in a final version, but still, it comes up in the editing process … Continue reading →

Critique of Bad Fiction

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on April 28, 2011 by Kelli Jae BaeliJanuary 28, 2018

Several years ago, I did a critique for a friend who wanted my editorial-writerly insight on some stories she wrote. After I read them, I was then uneasy, because I am not willing to lie, yet I didn’t want to hurt her feelings. When she asked about the results of my reading, I told her I was afraid she wouldn’t like my critique. She stated emphatically that she wanted the cold hard truth. And so, that’s what I gave her. Below, is the critique, and I post it because I feel it covers lots of territory that every new writer … Continue reading →

Purple Prose & Metaphoric Misdemeanors

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on April 28, 2008 by Kelli Jae BaeliNovember 28, 2011

  * as usual, these are my opinions, based on my own experience of writing and editing for the last 25 or so years. Not all writers, editors and readers will agree, and that’s fine. I offer it as valuable information I learned which made me a better writer, in hopes it will help another writer reach that goal. Writers, beware: You must NOT fall in love with your words. You must fall in love with your craft. That’s the thesis for this entire post, but read on, if you want details. I am forever mortified by the details that … Continue reading →

Romancing the Drone

Kelli Jae Baeli Posted on April 28, 2008 by Kelli Jae BaeliApril 30, 2012

My friend Georgie sent me this link because she knew I’d get riled up and blog about it. She was right. Romancing the Blog: Purple Prose: A Bum Rap A blog by Rebecca Brandewyne, the romance writer. She should have named herself Rebecca From Sunnybrook Farm. She’s delusional. One look at her absurd photo tells you all you need to know about her writing. She looks like Dolly Parton’s illegitimate daughter. Can you say Glamour Shots? I have written romance before. But I quickly outgrew the sort of romance to be had gushing from the pen of Ms. Brandewyne. I … Continue reading →

Quotes from Kelli Jae Baeli

"The conundrum of insanity, is that it serves us to be some of each. It's really only a question of degrees. You cannot possibly be 100% adjusted and live in this INSANE world. A little bit of crazy is a coping skill."

Politics Quotes

"People feel removed from sexism. 'I'm not a sexist, but I'm not a feminist.' They think there's this fuzzy middle ground. There's no fuzzy middle ground. You either believe that women are people or you don't. It's that simple." (Joss Whedon)

Quotes for Writers

It is advantageous to an author that his book should be attacked as well as praised. Fame is a shuttlecock. If it be struck at one end of the room, it will soon fall to the ground. To keep it up, it must be struck at both ends. ~ Samuel Johnson

Word of the Day

farragofuh-RAH-goh A confused mixture, hodgepodge, medley.
