I don’t consider myself the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I’m certainly not a spoon. I think about things. I put human nature under a microscope. Sometimes to my own peril. And I write about it. And I write about writing. And politics, science, cosmology, relationships, sex, coffee, my angst, my weirdness, my cats & anything else that pops or chaps. But I think you will often find me quite humorous. Especially if you like sarcasm. Unless you’re just blithely cruising through life, you’ll notice there’s a lot going on in this macrocosm of existence. This means there’s a …Continue reading →
reblog Kelli Jae Baeli My favorite of her book covers. Grumpy Cat cracks me the hell up. Kelli Jae Baeli is different from most of the writers I interview here at The House of Fists in that it was her non-fiction that first drew me to her work, as opposed to the horror or dark fiction practiced by the other interviewees. I’m trying to learn more about writing, though, and not just about writing horror, so I immediately asked her to do me the honor of being interviewed here. She writes very clearly and persuasively, her tone neatly balanced …Continue reading →
The educational system (especially in the U.S.) has failed to provide a useful appreciation of the sciences. Because of that, we have a string of social issues that stem from the generalized ignorance about the world we live in. Instead of just being disgusted by the plentiful ignorance, I’d like to try to do something about it. In light of the posts below (from one of my Facebook threads)…I am seriously thinking about starting a multi-author blog in order to teach from this standpoint–I want to have guest authors post about their area of expertise and/or interest in regard to …Continue reading →
I am reposting this here, because I was so relieved to see that someone else out there sees this issue clearly. I am hoping we can overhaul the lesbian literature environment, eventually. From the Lynn Pierce blog…. Piercing Fiction: Straight Arrow Reviews Literature, movies and whatever else occurs to me. Sunday, April 7, 2013 It’s time to be more discriminating in the books This is a post I made on a the group I moderate on Yahoo called Lesfic_Unbound. I’m sharing it here as a thought to put out to the community.I had contact with an author …Continue reading →
…Average Morning Weirdness… This morning, I rolled over to greet my honey, as she sat down on the bed (she almost always rises before I do). I heard three pops–one in my right shoulder, one in my neck, one in my left shoulder. I made some comment like, “Oh, my crunchy joints…they pop in sequence…it’s like dominoes. I have Domino Bones.” Then, I realized how much I liked the phrase. Domino Bones. “Sounds like the name of a canyon in Montana,” I say. Then put on my announcer voice: “They were lost in the canyon of Domino Bones and had …Continue reading →
Welcome to the Irony-Fest, please sign in and wear your name tags. This topic has become a comedy of ironies. Herein lies the oft-repeated back-handed compliments and erroneous and mixed opinions we authors often deal with, in relation to our work. It seems that some readers just don’t understand nor appreciate what authors are offering, and why. And they don’t seem to understand the function of short works in this regard. Would that we could be treated with the same respect that other professions enjoy, without suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. In one blog, Distracting Fiction: Brand …Continue reading →
So, got the first review on the eArticle I published today on Smashwords. The article is Giving it Away : Spoilers as Both Noun & Accusation (Why Book Reviews Matter & How to Write a Proper One) Review by: David H. Keith on March 19, 2013 : I found this book timely, although a bit vague and short on specifics. I’m not knocking the book – it’s only some 5100 words long, after all – but simply saying Baeli could have done more with it even if that entailed a much larger book. I think the topic itself – …Continue reading →
This is a wide subject area, but I want to focus on just a few things. As a segue, I have to share this post I came across. I was on a forum where people were posting for help about making money blogging. One poster was frustrated and confused and posted this: “Been using these for over a year and made 2 penies. How do I earn money on goggle. It is simply frostrating. I posted so many adds on my blog but I have earned no money. what is happening? I have been trying to write all the …Continue reading →
[This is another writing exercise between me and another writer. We each come up with a subject and both blog it, and don’t see each other’s version until after we’ve posted. It was my turn, and I suggested three unrelated nouns, made to relate in one piece. I chose pickles, chills and snakes.] FADE IN INT. HOUSE – DAY Two people are standing in front of a fireplace, warming their hands. We’ll call them MELANIE and BARBARA. They have been reading Dr. Seuss books all evening and are now taking a break. BARBARA reaches over and swipes her hand across …Continue reading →
My beloved and I have made this pact, starting yesterday, that we would pick a subject and blog it separately, just to see what each of us would come up with. My suggestion yesterday was “Are writers born or made?” Hers, for today, was “Cows with Guns.” Guess which one of us is more cerebral, and which one the goob? She also informed me that the title is from a song called “Cows with guns.” Who knew? I didn’t even do any research on that one except to glance over a Wikipedia page and notice it was the title of …Continue reading →
I have posted a widget to show my videos of my 6-volume book, Supernatural Hypocrisy: The Cognitive Dissonance of a God Cosmology on my blog for that project–the other blog is at the link. I hope it will be a more accessible way for those busy-bees among us to enjoy the content. As for the book itself, it has become such a Magnum Opus. I am considering breaking it into several volumes. But even if I do that, it is still taking more time than i like to complete. The reference section alone is up to 20 pages. So I …Continue reading →
In my periodic Google search on my name, i found this comment which i forgot about: Allena’s Freelance Writing Bloghttp://freelancewrite.about.com/b/2008/03/23/blogs-arent-legit-writing.htmBy Allena Tapia, About.com Guide to Freelance Writing “Blogs Aren’t Legit Writing”Sunday March 23, 2008I recently had a couple readers forward me a small rant from someone stating that blogs aren’t legitimate writing. This person indicated that blogs were basically a way for people to see their name in print, and nothing else. I think this was the attitude of “if anyone can do it, than it’s not legit.” The thing is, everyone can blog. But, everyone cannot blog well. What …Continue reading →
In response to a recent blog, (Ditto) a friend of mine mentioned that maybe the person I wrote about would not ever try to communicate with me about the situation, for fear it might end up in another blog. But I only write about people that way if they have been moved to the negative column, so her argument dissolves at the start. Had this person accepted the many opportunities to communicate with me, the blog would not have been written. She chose not to. As I said in that blog: “There’s an upside to this vocation that offers some …Continue reading →
Is a blog a blog or a post? Of course it was first called a weblog , then people truncated it by calling it a blog. A blog was where the page was that you posted, but it also seemed to refer to the actual post. But if you said, “I just posted a blog, go read it.”– that would seem to indicate that you created a blog site every time you posted…even though most people know that’s not what you meant. You meant you posted a post. Or blogged a post. But you don’t say, “go visit my posts”, …Continue reading →
Today is my birthday. I’ll be 44. (yes, i will! shut up!). And since today is my birthday, I thought I’d do the obligatory ruminations. Who, what, where, when, and why…and how.WHO: My big three identity markers are, Author, Artist, Singer-Songwriter. I’m also an avid blogger, a therapeutic touchist, a webmaster, an armchair philosopher, and….I like cheese. WHAT: Fiction and non-fiction–I have 12 books in print with about 5 more available (I hope) by the end of this year. I like to paint, and do sculpture and pottery. I record CD’s of my original music in my paltry home-studio, and …Continue reading →
